Cristal de Luz
Designer: Maria Teresa Tetê Leal. Produced by COOPA-ROCA Collective. Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2006–present. Presented in the exhibition Design with the Other 90%: CITIES, organized by Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Photo credit: ©TT Leal, COOPA-ROCA
COOPA-ROCA is a women’s artisanal cooperative in Rocinha, a favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. COOPA-ROCA improves the lives of its members by increasing their earning ability through traditional craft production. Reflecting the dexterity and skilled craftsmanship for which the cooperative is known, artisans crochet cotton and viscose covers over white globes to create the luminous Cristal de Luz lamps.Ellen Lupton
